First Group

Peter Marno conducted a review of occupational health provision for the train division of First Group and supported their HR and procurement in re-tendering the provision of the following:

  Peter Marno

• Lead Medical Adviser
• Occupational Health (including statutory medicals, case management of long term cases and advice for managers)
• Employee Assistance Programme (including Critical Incident management)
• Drug and Alcohol (including ‘For Cause') and Wellbeing.

"I have known Peter for 8 years since he was appointed to help Network Rail re-tender their occupational health (OH) services in 2001. He was already managing the private medical insurance scheme and had consolidated the various Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP) into a single provision. It was an easy decision, therefore, as an HRD in First Group (FG), to appoint him to assist FG in July 2008 to help re-tender OH, EAP and drug and alcohol services for the train division. Peter brought a breadth of knowledge and experience which enabled the working group to understand the options and, in particular, how the market had moved from reactive services to a more dynamic provision. As a consequence FG was able to tender for services which would both meet the safety critical requirements of the rail industry and enable managers to manage the health of their staff more proactively. We operated on a very tight budget which could have constrained Peter however I know that he gave many more hours, willingly, than he was contracted to do. I would happily use him for similar projects again in the future."

"As Procurement Manager for FG's rail division I needed to come up to speed quickly with the dynamics of healthcare provision and understand the scope of the healthcare services available. Peter not only helped me and the other members of the working party but added considerably to the list of suppliers already available to FG and was able to put into context the services they offered. He was not afraid to mention aspects of both our service and that from suppliers which might attract criticism and, as an independent, was always prepared to challenge our thinking. During this project the dynamics altered as the economic climate in the country changed. Peter rode the changes with us and I would not hesitate to recommend him to other procurement managers with healthcare projects to complete."
